Syrinx Concert : Zela Terry on cello

9th April, at 8 pm in the Cathedral

In spite of its’ profound evocative beauty, this piece written for the cello, which can be heard in Vence, on 9 th April, does not figure amongst the most famous repertory works. In fact, it was composed by Sir Edward Elgar, over the summer of 1919, at Brinkwells, his home in Sussex, where the sounds of gunfire could be heard, coming across the Straits of Dover, from France, during the First World War. This work is a kind of lamentation over war and its’ inevitable trail of destruction.

In the second part of the programme, the orchestra will play Mendelssohn’s Symphony no. 3, also known as ‘The Scottish Symphony’ which is very familiar to music-lovers. The story goes that the sight of Mary Stuart’s mortuary, completely overgrown and covered in ivy, inspired him to write this symphony.
